Signal Words

It doesn’t matter how powerful a speaker you are, you have to face the fact that people’s attention wanders. We can process words at 800 words per minute. You can do that with trigger phrases that will psychologically bring your listener back to you. Remember school? Every teacher’s favorite was probably “This will be on the test.” Here are some more to keep in your arsenal:

• “What’s significant here…”

• “I want to stress…”

• “Let me underscore…”

• “What’s important here…”

• “This is the key message…”

• “In conclusion…”

• If you remember nothing else, remember this…

• “To summarize…”

• “Let’s review”
