Are We Doing Enough For Others?
There is actual scientific proof that doing things for other people makes you feel better about yourself and the state of the world. Well, maybe it’s not exactly “scientific”, but it’s a fairly well known truth. When you do things for others, it allows you to see outside yourself. If you’re suffocating on your own pain, --and who isn’t in this pandemic --a great way to come up for air from that is to pull outside yourself and get perspective, and focusing on others is a great way to do this. You don’t need to have money to be able to give.
For example, I have a good friend, the author Francine LaSala, who recently lost her mother. She felt grief for her loss, but she did not let the situation cripple her. She chose instead to channel her grief into something positive, putting together an anthology of short stories with 18 other authors from around the world, which she published. How was it for others? She made the decision to donate all proceeds for the book to a foundation that does extensive research in the disease that claimed her mother. In addition to benefitting the charity, the book, A Kind of Mad Courage, gave 18 other authors a high-profile forum for showcasing their work, and made herself feel better about doing something in her mother’s memory.
