Managing Conflict

How can you smooth conflict when it occurs? 

• Diffuse opposition by narrowing the areas of apparent conflict.

• Get adversaries to agree that the objective is similar even if the solutions differ.

• Provide room for choice so that adversaries can feel they have participated in the final outcome.

• Acknowledge your opponents’ feelings, and agree that they should be dealt with.

• Demonstrate respect for and understanding of the other side’s position.

• Restate the opponent’s objection to see if he remains firm or is willing to back off.

• Leave on a high note.
