SALARY NEGOTIATION

Once you’ve done your homework and laid the groundwork, it’s time for the moment of truth: the salary negotiation meeting. How can you ask for what you want and keep your composure while you’re at it? Here are some tips:

1) Gratitude first. Start the meeting by showing appreciation for the opportunities your position have given you to grow professionally. In any situation that may potentially cause a confrontation, you always want to show good faith and gratitude.
2) Lead in to the reason. Remind your employer of your tenure, your accomplishments, and the last time you were given a raise.
3) Focus on your work, not on the dollar amount. Yes, you will have that number in mind, but it’s off-putting to vomit it out in front of everything else. Instead, go into detail with specifics about ways you’ve brought value to the company, and how you will continue to add value the more you grow with the company.
4) Take “no” for an answer. And do it with grace. Sometimes it’s just not the right time for a company to be giving raises. Take it in stride that it might not be able you at all, but also set up a meeting to revisit the discussion in a given time frame—perhaps three or six months.
