Painting a Clear Picture
I am a huge devotee of Message Mapping. I have too many experiences coaching top execs for high stakes presentation to say otherwise. You literally can design a presentation, leave the room and talk convincingly to people ten minutes after you design the map.
A Message Map is a collection of bubbles consisting of random thoughts that you collect on a white board or sheet of paper. Once all those thoughts are “out there,” they can be collected and organized. The “visual” really helps.
In the center bubble, write in the bottom line for your audience; what your audience needs to hear to do what you want them to do. As indicated earlier, the bottom line should not really be more than 12 to 14 words. From there, create other bubbles that support that bottom line. These will become the elements of your message that help get your bottom line across.
