LOOK LIKE YOU’RE LISTENING

Everyone wants to be heard, but more than that, they want to know that they are being listened to. Because what does it matter if people hear your words if they’re not taking them in—processing what you’re saying, and then, even better, acting on what you say? How can you ensure a VIP in your life knows you’re listening?

1) Make eye contact. This is easy enough when you’re face-to-face with a person, but it’s also essential on a video call. Make sure when someone is speaking to look right into the camera on your computer screen.
2) Nod. Seems simple enough. A nod is a subtle way to acknowledge what someone is saying. The key word here is “subtle.” Don’t overuse or over emphasize. This will have the opposite effect.
3) Repeat. Parroting is another way to say this. Essentially it means repeating the last words someone has said for effect. It’s an effective tool to let someone know you’re listening. Like nodding, this should be used sparingly and done with subtlety.
4) Express yourself. Don’t just sit there like a statue. The human face has 42 muscles in it. Work them out when you listen—and only positive expressions unless the moment calls for dour.
5) Write it down. Whether you’re in person or on a video call, writing down someone’s words when they speak makes them feel like what they’re saying really matters.
