Having it All
“I love my job but I hate the location so I have to find something else.”
Moving to another company because you don’t like the commute is old thinking. New thinking: This is an ideal time to find a job where you can telecommute.
From what I’m learning and experiencing in my own work, telecommuting is only going to grow as an option for work. COVID-19 has put our world on notice that we must change how we conduct both our personal and professional lives.
Many tech companies, for example, have enacted telecommuting-only policies, during the mandatory shutdown. These tech giants, including Facebook and Twitter, are finding no loss of productivity with people working remotely and are now planning for extended telecommuting, even after we discover a vaccine for this dangerous virus.
Some companies have been issuing virtual private network licenses to employees so they can access the network remotely and offering wireless hotspots to those who lack reliable home Wi-Fi. I predicate more companies will be offering this benefit. Why? According to Global Workplace Analytics, employers can save $11,000 a year for every employee who works remotely even half the time.
We all now have a chance to live where we wish and to have a successful career.
A friend of mine who works for a tech company is in the process of realizing his dream of living in the wilderness down south near a mountain range as well as a large lake. He can now have it all. Work in the woods and enjoy his life.
Even in crisis we can find opportunity.
