Getting Out of Our Own Way

For decades, I have made a pretty good living helping people learn to communicate more effectively, minimize their tendency towards self-sabotage, and help them stand out in their chosen career.

Enter COVID-19.

Over the past several months, I’ve heard nightmarish stories of people in self-destruct mode all due to the sudden canceling of our world as we know it. Many people have been telecommuting and thus have been able to collect a paycheck. But that doesn’t mean all the anxiety goes away. They are working from home very close to the kitchen—and sometimes even in the kitchen. They are enduring stress, loneliness, and fear of themselves or loved ones dying from COVID-19. So, they overeat or drink heavily. Or both.

A few weekends ago I visited a friend who is studying to be a Wiccan. Now, before you roll your eyes and chuckle, I have to say I was very impressed with her newly honed skills. At the July 5 full moon, she conducted a ceremony which I felt fortunate to be invited to. I love learning and I thought also, if I could pick up some meditation techniques I might be able to help those friends and clients who are eating themselves to death out of anxiety. My friend did not disappoint.

Four of us sat in a circle in a specific direction: east, west, north, south. My friend read a poem about inspiration and letting go and I found the reading restorative to my fragile COVID disposition. At some point in the ceremony we were asked to write down our issues so that we could banish them and begin our life anew. I did what was asked of me. We placed our bits of paper in a small cauldron and my friend lit them with a match. Through another reading we learned that we can say goodbye to negative thoughts and anxiety and fear by being more centered with the universe.

Some may think this is mumbo jumbo, but at this time of continued world tragedy, I found the ceremony more comforting than a church service. I’m not sure what to make of the metaphysical world, but I’m for anything safe that makes us feel more grounded.

Maybe meditation and banishing negative thoughts and being open to new experiences is just what we need to help us get through this heinous time in our history without engaging in self-sabotage. How are you managing? Leave me a comment below.
